Raspberry Pi got Cheaper
When the Raspberry Pi was first announced as a $25 PC it was hard to believe such a low price point could be hit. When the board did finally launch last year it didn’t manage to hit it, but that’s because the Model B version launched first at a $35 price point.
With stock of the Model B now steadily and regularly entering the marketplace, and being manufactured in the UK to boot, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has turned its attention to getting the Model A out there. Today, it has finally made it, and we can say that the $25 PC is available to buy.
Initially the Model A version will only be available across Europe. That makes sense if you consider how much demand there is going to be for it, and how long (months) people were waiting for their pre-orders to turn up when they bought a Model B at launch.
So, how do the $25 and $35 versions of the tiny PC differ? The $25 Model A has no Ethernet, USB ports are limited to just one, and it only has 256MB RAM (compared to the Model B’s upgraded 512MB). But it is $10 cheaper and it only uses around a third of the Model B’s power. That should make it highly desirable to anyone wanting to use it in a device that will run off a battery.
The Model A is being made available through Premier Farnell/element14, and for the UK at least the board is listed as being in stock. Just be warned that the $25 price point is before you add shipping and sales tax into the mix.
